Babbitted bronze bearings

Magnolia Metal Corporation manufactures precision babbitted bronze bearings using a modernized foundry and machine shop process built for consistent quality and repeatable results. We use Magnolia Grade II Babbitt made from virgin materials for our standard babbitted bearings, and special babbitt alloys are available upon request when your application requires a different lining material.

What Are Babbitted Bronze Bearings?

A babbitted bronze bearing is a two-material bearing that combines the structural strength of a bronze shell with a softer babbitt metal lining on the bearing surface. The bronze shell provides the load-carrying structure while the babbitt lining, a low-friction alloy made primarily from tin or lead, acts as the actual running surface against the shaft.

The babbitt lining is intentionally softer than the shaft it supports. This design serves three purposes:

  • Allows the bearing to conform slightly to the shaft under load
  • Embeds minor contaminants rather than scoring the shaft surface
  • Sacrifices itself before damaging more expensive equipment components

When the lining wears, the bearing is replaced or re-babbitted rather than replacing the shaft or housing.

Babbitted bronze bearings are commonly found in heavy industrial equipment, pumps, compressors, marine applications, paper mills, and steel mills where load, speed, and reliable lubrication are critical factors.

Precision Babbitted Bearings Built for Fit and Performance

Babbitted bronze bearings combine a strong bronze shell with a babbitt lining selected for bearing performance in demanding equipment. Our process is designed to deliver accurate fit, proper bearing clearance, and consistent crush so the bearing conforms correctly to the housing or connecting rod bore once installed.

We produce babbitted bearings using centrifugal casting equipment capable of spinning bore diameters from 3 inches to 24 inches with a maximum length of 26 inches. Babbitt thickness is determined per application so the lining matches your load, speed, lubrication, and service conditions.

Bearing Crush and Quality Control

Bearing crush is the amount the bearing shell protrudes above the exact centerline of the housing or connecting rod bore before the cap is torqued down. When compressive force is applied at the split line, the crush helps the bearing conform to the housing, maintain alignment, and seat correctly.

Final dimensions are verified using precision ground fixtures to confirm proper bearing clearance and crush before shipment.

What Magnolia Delivers

  • Stock availability supported by over 2,000,000 lbs in inventory.
  • Bearings and components made to your blueprints and specifications.
  • Machining features including radii, keyways, oil grooves, windows, and matched halves.
  • Part sizes from 1/2 inch to 34 inch OD.
  • Alloy options available based on your needs, including CDA 936 and Lead Free B 1, plus additional alloys such as C 903, 928, 937, 941.

Magnolia Guarantees No Rejects

Magnolia bronzes are stated to be guaranteed free from defects, including no blow holes, no sand spots, no segregated elements, no flaws, and no under surface faults that cause rejection. In accordance with industry practice, the guarantee is limited to replacement of defective material returned. Magnolia states its quality control procedure has resulted in returns of less than 1/2 of 1 percent of all bronze shipped over the last 10 years.
