#120 High Lead Bronze
#120 High Lead Bronze is formulated for bearing applications where lubrication is difficult or unreliable and where components may be exposed to high localized heat. With approximately 20 percent lead, it is designed to perform in harsher environments by helping absorb dirt, grit, and other foreign matter that could otherwise damage the shaft.
Compared to SAE 660, #120 High Lead contains up to three times the lead content and about one third the zinc content. It has also been used as a substitute in applications commonly specified for CDA 938, CDA 941, CDA 943, and CDA 945.
Typical Applications
#120 High Lead Bronze is commonly used in bearing and bushing applications where standard lubrication cannot be maintained:
- Slow-speed, high-load bearings where film lubrication breaks down
- Oscillating and reciprocating motion applications
- Rolling mill equipment and press components
- Mining, crushing, and heavy industrial equipment
- Applications where shaft contact with grit, dirt, or abrasive particles is likely
This alloy is well suited for bronze bushings and bronze sleeve bearings in equipment that runs intermittently or under heavy shock loads.

Casting Consistency and Quality
Magnolia’s casting process is intended to avoid issues often associated with sand and centrifugal casting and to promote even dispersion of lead throughout the metal. The goal is a consistent structure that supports reliable bearing performance.

Compare Quality
The photomicrographs shown compare two very high lead bronzes at roughly 20 percent lead, with the primary difference being the casting process. The steel cast sample made with Magnolia’s crystal control treatment is described as showing a more uniform dendritic crystallization and reduced segregation. The sand cast sample is described as showing segregated lead and Cu Sn crystal structure, which Magnolia notes can be associated with inferior casting quality.
